IOWA NURSING CONGRESSIONAL ROUNDTABLES ANNOUNCED

WASHINGTON, DC -- Iowa Congressman Tom Latham released the schedule of the first round of nursing roundtable discussions Thursday. The roundtables are an opportunity for Congressman Latham to gather insight and comments from Iowa’s nursing community to address the growing nursing crisis. Iowa is currently facing a severe nursing shortage. According to the Iowa Department of Public Health, Iowa is currently dealing with an eight percent shortage of nurses, which could grow into a 27 percent shortage if nothing is done to address the issue.

“We have an extremely serious problem,” said Congressman Latham, referring to the nursing shortage and the coming baby boomer retirement. “This could decimate quality health care if it isn’t addressed soon.”

Congressman Latham plans to keep listening to the Iowa nursing community throughout the state, and will be taking the information gained from the nursing roundtables back to Washington to direct the national debate on the nursing crisis from Iowa’s unique perspective.
